Cosmetology isn’t as manly as being in the Army, but I like it

“I am in school for cosmetology and I am learning how to do nails, but I have never done them on a live person. In school we used hand mannequins. The real hand has a person attached to it, but I like people. I have been in school for a year and three months and there is a lot to learn–chemical services, spa, and business. I was in the Army for seven years. When I got out, my wife asked me to go to school with her. The goal is to work at a salon and get experience and clients and then open our own salon.”

“You went from the Army to Cosmetology?”

“It wasn’t just regular Army, I was doing advanced stuff. I did airborne assault and went to the Ranger School. I did two tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. I am a disabled vet. I was injured when an Afghanistan mortar landed where I was walking, it blew me against a wall and messed my back up. It’s permanent and why I am not in now. Cosmetology isn’t as manly as being in the Army, but I like it. This is my second degree since I got home. I also got a degree on process technology. Cosmetology gives me a chance to be around people and talk. Manicures are fun, but I really like doing permanent waves and relaxers.”

“Five years ago, did you ever dream you would ever say that?”

“No. I didn’t know what any of these things were five years ago.”
