I always wanted to have my own restaurant and now I am chasing my dream

“I opened Bob’s Downtown Diner two years ago in November. I always wanted to have my own restaurant and now I am chasing my dream.  I have been in the restaurant business since I was 16-years-old and started out washing dishes and worked my way up. I worked for my father for 18 years at his restaurant, King Neptune’s in Gulf Shore,s and went to the school of hard knocks. I am still learning every day. I want to grow and put out a good product at a reasonable price for people. You dream big and take the hand you are dealt and roll with it. This my hand, a little dive, hole-in-the-wall on the corner. The menu reflects that and we adapt to what people like. I wanted something down home in downtown. Come in and be happy and be nice. My Uncle Bob found this place and wanted to open a restaurant his own restaurant but knew nothing about it, so we went into it together. I don’t know where it goes, maybe there is another location, different restaurant a different style. I have always wanted a steak house of just steaks. Maybe that will happen. Seafood is in my blood too. It is a competitive business and you challenge yourself every day to be better than yesterday. If you don’t have the three d’s, desire, dedication and determination, you aren’t going to be successful. If you aren’t learning something every day, something is wrong. This takes almost all of my time and the little bit of time off I have, I fish or play golf and spend time with my wife and son. Anything to do other than this. I am always thinking of the restaurant, how to get more people here. What am I doing wrong, what are we doing right? It is a balancing act and I want our employees to be a part of this and want to come to work. If you make a mistake, put it in your memory bank and don’t go back there. There are no limits to food and what we can serve. I try new things and listen to the customers of what they like and don’t like. Chocolate covered bacon. I see the vision of Mobile wants to create and where it wants to be in the next 20 years and I want to be a little part of that. I want to carve my little niche right here on the corner of fat and happy.”

You could have been a writer?.

Affordable, delicious and fun. Tony Sawyer delivered what Downtown Mobile needed… that little diner that exists in every great downtown that makes you feel like you’re one of the regulars. Of course, Tony’s responsible for that, bouncing between the grill and his customers. I don’t visit often enough, but I plan to change that. See you there!
