I am learning I get to be myself in art

“I am in eighth grade and have been working on the mural for Festival of Flowers for two weeks. I was never good at art. When I was little I liked to trace figurines. We had art in school, but our teacher left and there was no more art class. Working on this mural has been fun to get out of the house and do something for the community. I am learning I get be myself in art. In football, they tell you to bring your anger on the field. I can let other emotions out here and that is new for me. I have never met my dad. my sister and I live with my grandmother and I am so protective of her. I like to make people laugh and smile. What is the point in life if you can’t make anyone happy?”

“I have been working on this mural for since the beginning. I like taking my time with art. I have tagged a few trains and put graffiti on boxcars. I sometimes put on characters or themes. One took about a month to paint. I wish I had taken a picture because I heard they scrapped it. Art is my time to think. Other people tell me I have changed and calmed down since my time at Strickland Youth Center. People seem to like me for who I am. I have learned that jail sucks and I don’t want to go back.”
