I am the first African American woman promoted to major, but I want to pave the way for other women

April 27, 2017

I am the first African American woman promoted to major in the Mobile Police Department. It is a big deal and an honor, but I realize I didn’t get here by myself. My goal is to pave the way for other females, not just to be major but to be chief or assistant chief of police. That would be historic. We have never had a woman as either of those and in time that will happen. I have always had a passion for public service. I started out as a dispatcher at the Saraland police department 20 years ago and realized I could serve the community better as a police officer. I think you can make a difference as a police officer as long as your heart is in the right place and you have a passion for this job. Our goal is to make Mobile a safe city for everyone and as long as you have a good rapport with your community as long as you are honest with the community and the media and treat everyone fairly. We are all here to help one another.
