I carry a heavy load of juvenile violent offenders and capital murder cases. Nothing shocks me anymore

“My last name is Brown. I am an attorney representing poor, uneducated people and I needed a last name that is easy to remember and easy to find. I can say it quickly and in the process of an arrest, it sticks in their mind. I was married for a quick minute and got a great kid and a good last name. I was called into criminal defense, but I started out in personal injury. At the time it was the way to make money and I thought that was what I wanted to do. I wanted to be rich, retire early and travel, but about 8 years in I realized the justice system is messed up and ivory tower law firms win all of the cases. It started wearing on me and I had to get out.”

“I carry a heavy load of juvenile violent offenders and capital murder cases, but is a tougher generation and some of the ways to help are gone. Nothing shocks me anymore. I have to deal with the worst homicides and I might have bad dreams, but I won’t be shocked. I am German, so I am a fighter and I am not going to let someone hurt someone else. As a young person, I would put my nose where it didn’t belong to protect someone else. I don’t always do the right thing. I have done some bad stuff and I am not that great of a person, but right is right and wrong is wrong. We should be able to count on our justice system and when something is wrong, it should be punished. When something is right, it shouldn’t be punished.”

“The justice system puts a young person in jail that isn’t limited to young people and you might as well put that kid away for life. They are going to be worse than when they went in and they are going to come out angry and alone.”

“There is more to every situation than you know. I am intense and have ADHD and I see how I could snap too. I wouldn’t kill anyone, but I would stomp a mudhole in someone’s ass. Things happen. Most people don’t realize that most shootings and murders happen because situations raise it to that level and you lose control. I identify with my clients because I have been a substance abuser. I tell my story and my experience and show that they can come out of it too.”

“I look back and can’t imagine myself doing anything differently.”

None of us are innocent. Few of us own it.
