I have a strong sense of civic duty because my dad served in the military and for the first time I felt that I had found my purpose

“I had a 15-year plan when I went into the Merchant Marine Academy. I was going to be on the swim team, see the world, and then have a career in the Navy. It was all falling into place and when I was at boot camp and I don’t think I have ever had so much fun. Kids cried every day, but I woke up every morning excited to be there. I have a strong sense of civic duty because my dad served in the military and for the first time I felt that I had found my purpose. Two weeks into boot camp, I was diagnosed with diabetes and was disqualified from school. That was devastating and killed me emotionally. I went back to stay with my parents in Florida and worked with events at Daytona Speedway when I heard about a job in Alaska with a whale watching company. I didn’t know anyone in Alaska, but I moved there anyway. Walking to work past mountains and glaciers is like living in a postcard. I watched whales flying and twisting out of the water, they look giant cucumbers. Now I am thankful for the diagnosis because I met my first real boyfriend in Alaska and he is it for me. The new plan is that I want to study criminology, but there are no more 15-year plans. I learned my lesson. Someone said you are growing up when you are proud of the way you handle things. It has been hard, but I am still going.”
