“I make knives for peace of mind and there is art to the shape and the curves. I have learned to feel the metal and know where to cut. I still have all ten fingers. They have been beat up, but they are still here.I think about knives all of the time. I can’t sleep at night because I will be thinking about a knife and have to draw it out. The handles are made from wood behind my house but they have cut a lot of the woods down. I was a cotton farmer but the price of cotton went down then I started teaching art in schools. I have been teaching for 50 years. I am a painter. Landscapes and wildlife. I could live in the woods.
Being an artist makes you observant. People don’t pay enough attention anymore because they are so busy thinking about what is next. I like teaching kids to be observant and that they can do something no one else can do. It helps them loosen up and think about things besides making money. Life is about enjoying what you do. Go to as few meetings as you can and never volunteer because it becomes your job for life.”
