I took care of my mama until she passed away. I try to be strong but I still miss her

“I turned 70 in October. I come down here to kill time. My mama died in 2008.  I am a bachelor and my family looks after me. I never married. I took care of my mama until she passed away. She had dementia and she was in a nursing home where she didn’t know anybody. I went to see her twice a day, 7 days a week to make sure she was being taken care of. Dementia is terrible stuff. It is hard when they don’t know you and they don’t know how to eat or drink. I was the first one there when she was passing away. It is a terrible thing to watch your mama laying in the bed, dying. I told her I love her. I try to be strong, but I still miss her. I worked for Faulkner State and did maintenance and yard work for 25 years. I retired after mama passed on and I went into the yard and power washing business and that filled the days but that didn’t fill the nights where I didn’t see her shadow. I would say, ‘Where are you at mama? Where are you at?’ I was going strong until I had an accident about three weeks ago. I missed a step. I had to have surgery. I come here to get my peace. I will be back in time for spring and everything will be jumping and people will say, ‘Come on Fred.’ I will have to take it one day at a time, one job at a time, one thing at a time. What little money I make goes into gas and equipment. It is hard to get back up above the water line.”

Everybody has their own story and there are no two exactly the same. Life is fascinating in its simplicity.
