“I am a voice for my daughter Rancey, who can’t speak for herself. She is a classic case of Rett Syndrome. She is non-verbal and non-ambulatory and teaches us more then we will over know without saying a word. She is beautiful and speaks with her eyes. Rett is a neurological disorder caused by a mutation on the x-chromosome. She was diagnosed at 18 months and it was a long, dark journey to figure out what she has because it is a diagnosis of exclusion. By the grace of God, I jumped in with both feet to the biomedical research and 27 years later we have the road map to a possible treatment and cure.
My cousin, Gaynor, my best friend of life, passed away twelve years ago from bile duct cancer. She helped me advocate for Rett for years and got it into President Clinton’s budget. She said on her deathbed that she was going to be with me on the other side of this. When she was sick, I was with her through a lot of her treatment and she could only drink ginger beer. Four years after she died, I got breast cancer, and my sister made me ginger water to help me. It helped her migraines and she said it would help me. A year later, my son said at breakfast that I should bottle the ginger water my sister made and call it ROOT. I loved the idea but knew nothing about it. Three months later, the executive summary came out from the Rett foundation about getting to the root of the disorder. Confirmation that ROOT Ginger Water was the right thing to do. There have been 18 miracles and affirmations since then and I think we are on to something. Five percent of each sale of ROOT goes to neurological research. Ginger is anti-inflammatory, anti-nausea and helps with detox. We are working on a concentrated paste that can be added to sautee or cocktails With tequila it is a ‘MargaROOTa.’ It is sold in almost twenty locations right now and envision ROOT on hospital trays in school lunches. I see it sold at Whole Foods one day.
I am a realtor in Mobile with a social work degree. I don’t know anything about molecular genetics or creating a product, but I am an advocate by heart and I have been placed where God wants me to be. I am so driven to help find a cure and help others. We are all suffering. I want to help people get a glimpse of what is on the other side. It may be too late to cure Rancey. She will never talk and walk again, but I think recovery will be possible for younger girls. I want to save other families from some of the pain that we have gone through and give them hope for better lives for their daughters. My husband has supported the charge into this. I don’t want to sit at Ransey’s funeral thinking there is something I could have done. My greatest fear is that we find a cure after we have buried her, but Rancey was given to us for a reason and her life will not be in vain.
I have ADD and blessed with a lot of energy. Prayer also gets me through it. Sometimes it is just, ‘Lord I am losing it right now. I need some direction.’ Sweet friends and a lot of support have saved me in hard times. They understood when it was too painful to go to their daughter’s birthday party. I am learning to trust in gratitude. God loves us more than we imagine and He knows what tomorrow will bring.”
