I went around the world with the horses

“I am from Plaisance. My daddy died when I was five. My mama spoke French but didn’t let us speak it. If company came and they spoke French, we had to get out. I know how to cuss in French because everyone learned that.  My brother started quit school in fourth grade and went into the horses. I helped my family in the field, but learned how to avoid sweating.  When I turned 14, I stayed with a man to help him in his field. He gave me an acre of land I grew potatoes and corn that was all mine. I made a nice crop and bought my first car. I graduated from high school, the went to trade school for two weeks and didn’t like it. I went to work for the racetrack grooming horses. I did that all of my life and went around the world the world with the horses. I retired from the racetrack in 2009 after I had two strokes.  I didn’t ride the horses, but I made sure they looked good and clean. I was one of the top five groomers and learned how to stay away from the bad horses. They can kick or bite you or walk on your feet. Some horses know when to get you. One filly I was rubbing won $500,000 in a race in Kentucky. That was exciting. Everyone knew me as the black man with green eyes. I was the only one in my family with green eyes and people asked where I got them from, did my mama jump the fence? She never said anything about that, but we had a good life.”
