It is calm on the water. Out there everything makes sense

“It is calm on the water. No noise. Just you and nature. I have to do this every day and I do it as much for my head as my body because out there everything makes sense. I went to high school in Hawaii and always had a love for the water. Paddleboarding is one of the best forms of exercise for staying fit. I started it when I retired here three years ago. So many asked about the board that I started a little business renting boards and teaching, but I don’t make any money off of it. Paddleboarding is easier than most people think it is. We have Saturday paddles at Pirate’s Cove and this has been a way for me to make friends. I retired and had to choose between making more money or wiping off the hard drive and doing what I want to do. I didn’t have a plan, but it worked.”

“I started out as a police officer in Houston, but didn’t make enough money to support my family. I went to law school, but I didn’t want to be a lawyer either. I joined Amoco Oil Company and worked for their global security group for 28 years. I went to some of the most dangerous, remote, and remarkable places in the world. Sitting here by the bay allows me to meet people. There are a lot beautiful stories of people my age and older, but some people look past them. There is sadness too because a lot of people have lost spouses. They live alone and come here with their dog to connect. We come from water. There is something primal in our DNA that draws us to it.”
