It is hard to find work when you don’t have a ride

“I have been homeless for two years. I am a painter but lost my job. I lost my car and my home. I still paint when I can get the work, but It is hard to find work when you don’t have a ride. I had a car, but it broke and I didn’t have the money to fix it. It became a piece of junk. I use the money I get here to pay for a motel room. It cost $57.50 every night and I get it most days. That is $400 a week for shelter. I stayed at the Salvation Army shelter, but I couldn’t sleep there at night. My cellphone quit yesterday. People have offered me painting jobs but they think because I am homeless I will do the job for free or next to nothing. I can’t do that. I need to make enough money to get back into an apartment and back on my feet. Being homeless is hard, but losing my mama was harder. Police don’t like the homeless being here they will lock you up for it. There is no money to pay the fines that goes with it. Some people are kind and give a couple of dollars. Some give little bags with food and water. That helps. I am a good painter. I just want a job and to get back on my feet.”
