There is always more to the story. Interviewed a man today in jail for domestic violence. When he was a young boy he was molested for several years by his uncle and never told anyone. Years later he saw his dad commit suicide and life didn’t get any easier after that.
My neighbor is a kindergarten teacher and tells her class that “hurting people hurt people.” It is true for grownups, too. We need to do better about mental health in this country and helping people heal from their pain and trauma instead of watching them self-medicate with drugs and alcohol or take their pain out on the people who love them most.
Telling stories is healing, even in prison. He was grateful for a chance to share things he had been too ashamed to tell his friends and family and thanked me when it was over. I was surprised by that and told him this doesn’t have to be how his story ends.
One day I want to go back and do a Souls series with prisoners.
