We are the day makers and the havers of fun

“I am a tuba player and a full-time musician. I also play piano at church. I started playing in at Murphy and LeFlore High School. My grandfather plays tuba in the Excelsior band.”
“I am a retired math professor from South but my original degree was in music. I hooked up with these guys about two years and we are now Dauphin Street Stompers and play all over with gigs. We are at Wet Willie’s every Thursday night and at Bob’s every Saturday morning. Playing in the streets is how we rehearse. I have been playing in the streets for 20 years and in front of the Peanut Shop for about 19.  The jazz we play started on the streets. The banjo came in because it was the only instrument you could hear cutting through the horns.  I taught math for 25 and taught at the Alabama School of Math And Science. I also taught music here and there and it is good to just be focused on music.”
“When we hooked up, I had just come off a tour from playing on the streets with the Brothers of Brass based out of Denver. We played on the streets of Denver in below-freezing temperatures.  You need gloves for that. I came back home to play in Mobile. This is now my only form of income and gigs and it is more than just playing on the streets. We hear everything from ‘you guys make our day’ to ‘you guys need to move along.’ As Doc says, ‘we are the day makers. We are the havers are fun.’ We get to do what we love and don’t take it for granted. We have a love for the art of this music. We have a lot of gigs in Mobile and New Orleans. They all come from people seeing us on the street. We play all of the time during Mardi Gras. Growing up, I didn’t see music as a profession, but I love the music scene now. The musicians in Mobile always take you in and make room for you to play. This is Mobile in its purest form. The more musicians there are like us, the better this scene will be.”
