“We moved here at the end of June. Big pine trees fell all around us, and we couldn’t get out for four days. We asked our landlord if he had a chainsaw, and he said, ‘Yeah, but not on me.’ He did nothing to help and is going to demolish the trailer. We actually did a lot of work on the inside to make it nicer.
Our power went out at about 8 p.m.. Friends told us to come to their house, but I didn’t think it was going to be that bad, just a lot of rain. The two of us got under the couch with her two dogs. You could hear the trees snap before you heard them fall. It felt like the wall was breathing as it expanded out with each burst of wind. We felt the wind coming underneath and all around us. It was the scariest thing I have been through in my life. the tree crashed into the bedroom and bathroom. We are lucky to be alive. There are trees smashed against every window. We were completely trapped in here for four days until they came and got us this morning. There was a tree hanging over our car. One person came with a chainsaw and couldn’t get through the first tree. We had no dog food, no power, no running water. All we had to eat was a can of cream corn we shared with the dogs and a bag of bad noodles.
I tried to cut something down with a machete and was trying to find a neighbor to help us. Starvation was kicking in. I don’t think I understood what I was looking like by the time I climbed around all of those trees and still had the machete in my hand, but two women stopped to help. They sent in a friend with a big machine to cut us out. They also brought us two bags of dog food, food and cold Powerade. We had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Those women saved us.
It is hard to walk outside and not feel like a tree will fall on me. We can’t believe we just made it through that and survived. We are so lucky to be alive.”
