We feel like we are human here

“We came here for freedom and to feel safe. You have money or don’t have money, you are treated the same and we feel like we are human here. I am sorry but people here don’t appreciate that they are living in the best country in the world. There are jobs and schools. In Palestine, we work to feed the government and the government takes all of your money. Here it is different. I have been here for 12 years. My wife and family came here four years ago. She had been scared of the United States before she came.

I haven’t seen my family in Palestine in six years. It is safer to stay here because I don’t want to lose my life. I don’t even watch the news. I came to Mobile because I had a friend here. It is a small town and an easy place to work. People are good to me here and I like it.

The people in Palestine are trying for better, but it is too hard. I lived in the West Bank and each day you go work, maybe you come back, maybe not. Even if you are just trying to make a living, you may get killed for nothing. Nobody protects us. Not even our government. We get punched for that. Our religion is not violent and does not tell us to kill. If you have a Christian or Jew next door, we are supposed to be respectful nice to them and show them the good of our religion. I feel like now everything is different. I don’t know why and I don’t understand. People, not the religion, are choosing to kill. I blame the governments. They don’t want us to think, just live for today and don’t think about tomorrow. It is scary and I hope one day we all find a way to live in peace.

I appreciate this country. It is my home and it protects my kids and my family. If there was ever a war, I would fight for this country. My religion gives me permission to respect the country I live in and other religions. This is what I believe. I work and do everything right. I have legs and arms and use them for working. I work in construction and can work 60-70 hours whatever I need to take care of my family. I have six kids and my wife stays home with them. I am not complaining.

My kids came here four years ago and didn’t know any English. The teachers cared about them and now my kids now are doing very well in school. My kids are my dream and I want to see them as doctors and teachers. I don’t want them to go back over there, because over there does not deserve my kids. It is better for them to be here.

Muslims come here wanting peace and a better life. Like the shootings that happened in Las Vegas, every country has crazy people. It comes from inside them, not from their religion making them do it. We heard a lot of wrong things about people in the U.S., too, and I found out they aren’t true. We all have red blood and one God. We are all human.”

Thank you for putting this interview out here- it speaks sooo very loudly! Thanks for making me re=evaluate myself, my friends, my community. I agree wholeheartedly that we as life long citizens to America do take things for granted to often and then we come in contact with someone like the folks in your interview….shame on me— nuff said
