We have many dreams but it was hard to achieve those dreams in Egypt

“We are from Egypt. I met my wife collecting money for poor people. I had my own engineering company in Egypt but the economy was bad. We moved to the U.S. to work hard and have a new opportunity and a good education for our kids. I was here 18 months without them waiting for everything to go through with immigration. It is expensive and takes so much time. People have to communicate with each other. Some of the uneducated in Egypt don’t know about the U.S. and just believe the propaganda of the media. We had President Mubarak over 30 years. We couldn’t speak up or we would get arrested. We couldn’t talk about politics. After 30 years, people get tired of that. We had a revolution but we didn’t know how to do that and things got worse. Much is done through the black market and some people in Egypt have to steal just to feed their families.”

“The people here are good to us. I learned some English in school in Egypt. But I need more conversations to get better. It was hard leaving my mom and sisters because they are my best friends. I didn’t know anyone here.  We have many dreams but it is very hard to have those dreams in Egypt. I also want to learn how to drive. That will help me get out and meet people.”
