“I have been a police officer in Mobile for 16 years and have watched this city grow. There are so many tourists coming in and I saw the need for a souvenir shop downtown. The idea hit me three years ago but I didn’t know how to do this. I was getting ready for a police conference and we did swag bags and it took me five days to find things to put in them. I thought there had to be a better way. I got with my husband, John Cauley, who has a jewelry store, and we brainstormed. If you have faith, things happen. John said, ‘Don’t go through life wishing you would have done something and you didn’t do it. Let’s do it.’ So we started it. If we make it, we make it, and if we don’t we tried. We have laughed, gotten creative and had the most fun. He is the one who put everything together.
We talked with our friends about what they would want and we started from scratch. We visited other cities to see how we could best showcase Mobile. We are adding local artists and people who make local food. This stretch on Conception Street is going to pop and it is all things for the people. We want the store to give people something fun to do after dinner if they don’t want to go to a bar or a nightclub. We will open Wednesday-Sunday, 11am-9pm. I will be on duty during the day and here during off duty. John will be here, too.
I worked for a law firm for 16 years. Law enforcement and servicing the community are a passion. Protecting the community is in your soul and I want to make it a better place to live. I never thought I would be doing this. Who would have thought I would be a police officer and opening a souvenir store. I couldn’t have done this without my support team and faith and this is overwhelming but exciting. Standing here right now in this store is a dream and a wow moment.”
