When you have nothing, you are forced to learn how to be creative

“When the Special Period began in the 90’s there weren’t many materials or resources to do anything, but Cuba had mud that I could make into clay and there was polish to finish my pieces. I worked with bronze before the Special Period but there was no electricity or gas, so I gave it up. Even when Cuba began to revive a little bit, I stuck with ceramics. All of my pieces come from my emotions or memories. I want to share what I have gone through and what I am feeling through with other people and they may get their own emotions and feelings.”

“My oldest daughter was born in 1990 during the Special Period and there was nothing to eat. Even when there was milk, it would come from far away and the truck would run out of gas when it was delivering so the milk never made it to us. There was nothing, All Cubans suffered during this time. No one could go to school, everything was just stopped. A lot of people have tried to forget about this time, but I don’t think people should forget. Cuba has always had a culture of resistance and even when we have nothing, we make things out of nothing. We work hard to make things out of what we have. When you have nothing you are forced to learn how to be creative. Even with the pain, I never forget to be happy with what I am doing and to be passionate about my work. I have to keep going forward and make things happen.”

(The Special Period was an economic crisis that began in 1989 when the Soviet Union pulled out of Cubs. The economic depression was at its most severe in the early to mid-1990s before slightly declining in severity towards the end of the decade. There were severe shortages of gas and diesel and decreased use of automobiles. The Special Period changed industry, health, and diet in Cuba and people were forced to live without many goods they had become used to.)
