You can’t give up on your dreams while working for someone else

January 7, 2019

“I have been working at McDonald’s for two weeks. I worked at Walmart for four years before this. I have been working since I was 16 and it is a check to check process. I am a drummer and do a little rap here and there. I also try to promote people who do that around the city. I work to pay my bills and try to keep the career I want to do going. There is not much money coming in as an artist. It is hard to get support here. I am making more than minimum wage but it is still not enough to pay bills. You have to have a strong mind to do it or you will be on the street selling drugs because it is quicker money. I learned my lesson and don’t want to be out there.  I meet great people working with people. I like taking care of people and I work for the customers. We are all human and have our own issues going on at home.

People give up on their dreams because they feel like they have to give them up to survive. But at the end of the day, you are working for someone else’s dream while your dream dies. Your future is your future, their future is their future. They are satisfied, you are not. I have learned you have to live for yourself.  Don’t give up. Your career is not going to come overnight, but keep working toward it.”
(This week is a series on Our Southern Souls about the people behind the name tags, counters, microphones, and visors. The ones who serve us, check us out and help meet our needs. Each has suffering and struggles, dreams and fears. Behind that person is history and mystery that you may never know, but each one is worth paying attention to and learning a little more.)

Fairhope is full of artists…..this is a heartbreaking statement! Fairhope haven for artists! Maybe this young lady has no one to inform her about the Eastern Shore Art Center or unable to afford classes or anyone to foster her talent. To an artist or a supporter of the arts in our city: please look up this young artist and share your talent and wisdom with her.
