Everyone needs a little attention

March 8, 2024

“I found my niche early in life. Got my first doorman job in the summer of ‘83 and stayed with it. I’m two years from retirement, but still don’t know what I’ll do when I grow up. Treating guests like they’re in my own house gives me the energy to work. My family is from New Orleans. I’ve been downtown a long time and know where the fun and good food are. I love this city and enjoy steering folks to the best experiences.

Every day is an adventure, not work. I’ve even opened doors or hailed cabs for Mark Wahlberg, Dustin Hoffman, and Flip Wilson. A pregnant Christina Aguilera left here in her limo to perform at Jazz Fest. I make sure every cab driver knows where they’re going and how to take care of my guests.

Everyone needs a little attention. I offer to help each person stepping into the Roosevelt Hotel. They may decline a hand with luggage, but I escort them to the front desk–getting their names and making a connection. I love it when they come back later and ask, ‘What’s your name again’?”
