I can’t comprehend that there is a possibility we could lose Ukraine

March 5, 2022

“I grew up in Ukraine. I graduated from the university and moved to Canada to pursue my education. I witnessed a revolution in 2014, but it was nothing compared to what is happening today. My family moved to Texas six months ago. My mom is here helping us with the kids, but my dad is still in Ukraine. He is safe for now, but when the whole country is on fire, nowhere is safe. We tried to get him to come here, but he thought it would be fine in Ukraine. He didn’t believe it could escalate this far. He is 64 and has no intention of leaving his land and starting over.

We lived on a farm in a remote village in west Ukraine. Now a huge country is invading us. I am scared of losing my home country. My kids speak English and Ukrainian, and I never want them to lose their attachment to their roots. I can’t comprehend that there is a possibility we could lose our country.

My friends in Ukraine are hiding with their small children or living in basements. It is hard to watch the news. I feel helpless. I am glad we have these protests with a chance to speak out and help somehow. I’m so proud of Ukrainians and how they united, not just in Ukraine but all over the world.

We didn’t know the invasion would become this. Does it stop with Ukraine? Does Putin move into Europe? I wish the world would stand against him and put him back in his place. I watched the Russian news and it’s just lies. People have been brainwashed for years. It’s hard to change it now.

There is already so much devastation in Ukraine. It will take years to rebuild. How do you forgive someone for all of this destruction and the people he killed. Kids are witnessing this. This invasion will teach the Ukrainians to have a strong army and be prepared for anything. On the other hand, we learned who our “brotherly” nation is. We should look to the “west” because the “east” brings nothing but killings and blood. My heart aches watching everything, but good will always win against evil.
