“We lost power about 5 on Saturday morning. About 45 minutes later, the water came rushing from the back side of our house to the front side. It happened so fast. We had to wade out in waist-deep water with our six kids and what we had on our backs. My kids are 14, 13, 11, 9, 6 and 4. We didn’t know it was coming. We are in a no-flood zone and it snuck up on us. Once it hit our neighborhood, people realized that it was bad. We are now living with my mother-in-law. She didn’t flood. We don’t know where we go from here. We are gutting and trying to save what we can. Insurance adjusters are taking forever. We were able to save a few clothes. Furniture, pictures and appliances are all gone. We have to be strong and thank God we are safe. People say the things we lost are just material things, but some of those things have sentimental value to me. We have been reading the posts on Facebook and it is crazy. Let the shoe be on the other foot and see how this feels. There are times where we were the ones volunteering to help give out meals and take care of other people and now it is happening to us. This is a helpless feeling. That should be me helping. Some people have a lot of pride, I am one of them. It is hard to accept help, but I am so grateful for what people have done and our family taking us in. Strangers we don’t know have helped us. One lady took us into the store and bought drinks and food for my kids and gave my husband $100. We didn’t have a vehicle and didn’t know where to go, I broke down and cried and thanked her. I have one boy and lost all of the baby pictures I had of him. I cried for an our over that. This is hard. We saw the Texas flooding and never thought it would happen to us.
