Drawing helps us stop and pay attention to the world because the world moves so fast these days

“Drawing helps us stop and pay attention to the world because the world moves so fast these days. We don’t stop to look or enjoy it enough. There are amazing things at our very feet and we don’t see them.”

“I don’t think of it as art. It is just looking. It is so rich in Cuba. There is a lifetime of observation”

“How many journals do you have?”

“10-15 journals of our holidays. We both do it.”

“We get older and forget something or argue over a memory and go back to the books. I pick one up and an hour later I am still reading it.”

“I like writing, but I put too much detail in the words. There is a relaxed almost Buddhist state to drawing. I teach art and I always look at student’s notebooks. You can manufacture a portfolio, but sketchbooks are more personal. It’s where they are now.”

“I am a designer and when I design I have to bring something from inside me. All of these things are inside just sloshing around and waiting to be pulled out and mixed with something else. Add a bit of this and that. Looking and drawing is how I put things it. It is so powerful and valuable to me.”
