“My grandfather opened The Peanut Place in 1907 and sold nothing but peanuts. Peanuts are the original snack. It began in the Civil War as a nutritious meal they could carry in their pockets while hiking. They gained popularity toward the end of the 19th century with circuses when they became associated with elephants. There was no candy so they had guys selling hot peanuts and popcorn. It became something easy to sell that was hot and nutritious. Peanuts have always been popular in the South and are one of the crops that helped save the South. 80 percent of the peanuts grown are grown within 100-mile radius of Dothan, Alabama. They are mainly grown for peanut butter and peanut oil. The peanut crop is harvested in October and we get the peanuts in boxes and burlap bag and sell peanuts to concessions and booster clubs. My uncle ran the business after my grandfather and later sold it. The last guy who had it was going to move on so I came here to keep it going. It is an artifact and history and we get tourists and people from around the world. Not many things last this long. There are about to be more restaurants opening on both sides of us so that will be good for business.”

Your shop is one of my most favorite memories as a child! My husband & I are so glad you are still there…You are an historical Mobile treasure! Your store should have a plaque out front! We have to go in & get some fresh, hot nuts everytime we are downtown!
