“I have been letting my hair grow for three years. I was going to get it cut to my shoulders, but before my husband died last month he told me not to cut it. I don’t know how long he wanted me to wait so I am just getting it trimmed. We were married for 20 years and he had cancer. I have good days and bad days. We had him cremated and he is at my friend’s house and I go visit him. We were living in an apartment and I couldn’t afford the $700 so now I am living at McKemie Place. We were homeless 12 years ago so I have done this before and I know some of the women. I want a place to live so my mama to come live with me. She is 78 years old and still works at Walmart in north Alabama. My husband was in the military and gave her shot glasses from around the world and she keeps them in her kitchen so she can touch them every day. My daughter has Down syndrome and was the first special needs child to go to normal school in Blount County. She helped teach special ed children. I had another husband for 18 years, he had money but he was mean. Gary didn’t have a lot of money but he was good to me. Happiness is more important than money to me.”
