“I took a job in Mobile ten years ago during the big recession and moved from Washington State for a fresh start. I didn’t know anyone, but the city, people, and food welcomed me. Mobile is mystical and magic, and now it’s home.
I was never the cool person, so I do things like this at the Joe Cain parade to make friends and meet the cool people. I want to hear their stories. One year, I dove into the crowd along the parade route and took selfies. Another year, I gave hugs to everyone. This year, I am getting autographs. I just ran into a Girl Scout troop and every single one of them signed my book. Mr. Mobile Mask even signed it.
My girls are 12 and about to be 11. I want to show them that love is the way to go. Every person has a story worth listening to — whether they grew up rich or poor, or in another country. Listening to stories from people on the street is how I keep learning and growing. We just have to stop talking and start listening. ”
