“I got a bike yesterday from Delta Bike Project. I had to work five hours for it and whatever Jeff asked me to do, I did. He said, ‘We are going to have a positive attitude in the heat. Take breaks and hydrate.’ I started out washing bikes. I am 68 and diabetic and he felt sorry for me and told me I could sit down, but I kept standing. He saw I could work and had me unload the storage units out back that were full of bikes. We took them out, cleaned and organized them, picked up the trash, and loaded them back in. It was a lot of fun. Right now I am walking everywhere, but I am numb from the knees down and can’t feel my feet. I had to learn to walk again and have to concentrate when I walk. It is easier to ride a bike because it is from my knee up instead of knee down. I need to start working on my upper body strength for balance. Having a bike means I can get around a lot faster and get a lot more done. I am a Vietnam veteran and have been here a little over a month and they have already got me going into housing. I am a road dog and have traveled all over the country and decided it was time for me to come back home. I am enjoying Mobile. The people have been good to me and I was really impressed with that bike shop. They asked what kind of bike I wanted and put a new kickstand and new tires on my bike. We are going back over tomorrow to volunteer and get a helmet, chain and lock. They are so cool over there. Many people showed up and they worked on bikes all day.”
Good enough isn’t an option. It’s got to be the best I can do.
