“I grew up in Rwanda when there was war and genocide. I survived, but I lost my whole family, my mom, dad, grandpa, aunts and grandmothers. We were running in the woods and hiding in the swamps with a group of people and trying to get away. They were after us with spears and weapons. I grew up in orphanages and with kids with different struggles. I always tried to be positive and believe that everything happens for a reason. I am a survivor and I am here and God is good. I am doing good. I played volleyball on the Rwanda national team and played around the world with that team, but I am 7 feet tall and coaches started talking about me playing basketball in the United States. I came from Africa and flew across the ocean and I didn’t know anybody. I was 19 and didn’t speak English. I have been Kentucky from Georgia to Mobile. I was offered a basketball scholarship at the University of Mobile and I have been here for 3 or 4 years. I will play semi-league basketball and see if I can get in the pros. This is home now. Sweet home Alabama. Everything is good.”
