I have been picking up trash every day in Downtown Mobile for almost three years

“I have been picking up trash every day in downtown Mobile for about three years. I go down Government, Dauphin, Broad, and Spring Hill. I pick up paper, McDonald’s and Burger King bags, diapers and baby wipes. There are lots of cigarette butts and beer bottles and I put them all in trash bags. I do this because helping people makes me feel good. I am happy picking up trash and singing my church songs. I stay at RV Taylor and clean that up too.

I get up at 4:15 a.m. and catch the bus at 5. The bus is my only way to get around. It doesn’t run on Sunday so I walk downtown that day. I go to McDonald’s for breakfast, then start picking up trash in the McDonald’s and Burger King parking lots. I clean from about 6:20 to 9 or 10 a.m. All of this walking keeps the weight off me. My husband passed away in 2018. We were separated but I still cared for him. I wouldn’t mind getting a job helping with cleaning and doing what is right. Growing up, the only thing I had on my mind was school and church. My godmama was very spiritual and she helped raise me.”
