“My family has lived in Daphne for generations. My dad taught me how to sew when I was eight and showed me how to save money by making and repairing clothes. He also taught me to be independent and not ask anyone for anything. He said you never know when your loved one may pass away, so you have to be ready to take care of yourself. 

But I also know love can also last. My brother introduced me to my husband, Marlon James. They went to school together, and my brother saw a good future for me with Marlon. My brother was right; we’ve been married for seven years but have been together for 18 years.

Marlon and I moved to Tuscaloosa and worked at the Mercedes plant. My dad worked on cars and taught me a lot about them. I started in the body shop for Mercedes and worked up to assembly with the electrical connections and brake lines. It wasn’t hard, and I was dependable and fixed mistakes. Then I hurt my back and had to find something new. 

After that, we moved back to Daphne. God told me to start my own business making ice cream and lemonade. That grew into other desserts and planning events. I also decorate and sew clothes, curtains, and pillows. I put my heart and soul into everything I make, adding a thank you note with each order. I love my customers and want them to know someone cares about them. 

I have to stay busy and be around positive people. My mom and nieces are always right beside me. I miscarried in my early twenties but I will be a mother one day. I pass my lessons down to my nieces: be consistent and keep going. I teach them they can be leaders, have a business, brighten someone’s day, and love yourself.”
