Losing an eye in Vietnam killed any chance of working on a train

November 6, 2017

“I have loved trains since I was five years old. My brother had a Lionel set and I got it when he got older. I am 68 years old and have loved trains my whole life. I have about 100 trains at my house. When I was a kid, it was the size, the rumble, and the power. My grandfather worked on the railroad. I never did. I went in the service and was wounded in Vietnam in a landmine. Losing an eye killed any chance of working on a train. I still hunt. I wasn’t politically motivated, I just wanted to join the Marine Corp. and go to war. I accepted the fact that something could happen. Getting wounded was part of it. Laying in bed moaning and groaning about it is not a part of me. I had a job to do and I did it.”
