“We came from Germany to see the Rolling Stones. We saw their shows in Argentina two weeks ago, then took a break at home to relax and make some money. I saw them for the first time in 1965, in Hamburg, Germany. I was 13 and ran away from home to see them. My mother figured it out and had the police bring me home. I swore that I would see them a second time, then a third time, and a fourth time. I stopped counting after 65 shows. 50 years later and they are getting better and better. It’s nice to watch them because it means you aren’t getting old.”
“Why do you care so much about the Rolling Stones?”
“I can’t tell you. Mick would say it is a chemical reaction, and I think that must be it. I made my girlfriend start coming with me and there are always foolish, funny, crazy people around. She is into it now and made us come to Cuba. The three shows in Argentina were unbelievable because the people there are wired and crazy in a positive way. They move you around. It feels like sex. We always get there early to get in front. We have seen shows in the rain. If you are a Rolling Stones fan, you have to get tough. We have travelled the world to see them. We saw them in Atlanta and saw St. Paul and the Broken Bones. We loved the band and the singer wore beautiful shoes. Say hello to them. You see great bands open for the Rolling Stones and Mick teaches us to open our heart to any music. Listen first and then decide if you like it.”
“Have you ever met Mick?”
“I met him the first time in 1975 in Atlanta. We knew the hotel they were staying in and I got on the elevator and Mick was standing there and said hello. I fainted like a girl. He said, ‘Just relax and cool down.’ His face was so near, but his voice sounded so far away. The floor came to me. I could hear Mick saying, ‘Oh no. Oh no.’ He waves to me from the stage each time he sees me. I have seen the start and want to see the end. I keep myself in good shape and don’t drink or smoke, so I can get my packages together and travel to see them. Mick is calling me so I have to go. Let’s keep them alive. Let’s keep us alive.”
