Pennies in June

May 25, 2019

This morning I started writing the final story of the sex trafficking series that begins in Lagniappe next week. Finally getting to the light at the end of a dark tunnel, but pennies have become the reminder that if one story helps one victim it will be worth it.

Kendall Phillips of Gulf Shores started The Penny Story and compares pennies to the victims of human trafficking. Pennies are stepped on and over. Left in couch cushions or on the ground. They are invisible but everywhere. We don’t see them because they have no value. The Penny Story says the copper coins represent the millions of victims around the globe. Kendall sees a victim in every penny. She picks it up, prays for a victim, and puts the penny away.

There will be stories from prostitutes, ex-strippers, johns, victims of sex trafficking, and those trying to help on Souls during the month of June. I learned there were many things I didn’t understand.

I will never see the penny as worthless again.
