Silver City was just the wink of an eye, and now the eye is gone

April 1, 2023

“We lost everything — our home, my truck, and all of our possessions. I don’t want to believe this happened. We worked hard to accomplish something in life, just to have it blown away so fast.

But we are all alive, and my strength comes from the Lord and my family. We are salvaging what we can. We found our important papers, a Barbie, high school diplomas, and the coins my wife was collecting for our kids.

There were about ten trailer homes in our circle before the tornado. Only one is still standing, but everyone survived. We heard the weather siren and went next door to my mama’s brick house. The tornado came through hard, and I jumped in front of a door to stop it from hitting my mom.

My mother drove a school bus for Humphreys County for 53 years. I thought I would drive trucks and get out of Silver City, but I met my wife and stayed. We have been together for 37 years and married for 32. We have four kids and seven grandkids. I am a production manager for Consolidated Catfish in Isola. I have worked there for 35 years, and the owner and his son came by earlier to check on us and offered help.

Our community is filled with good people, but it will never be the same. Silver City was just the wink of an eye, and now the eye is gone.”

———————————————
Last Friday night, a tornado plowed through Mississippi, destroying much of Rolling Fork and Silver City. These small Delta towns are 30 miles north of my hometown of Yazoo City, and I often drive through this area when I go home. I went to Silver City on Saturday to help share their stories.

Here are two ways to help residents of Silver City:
Donate to the GoFundMe set up by Camille Rogers, an Alderman in Silver City
