Struggling through school makes me a better teacher

June 28, 2019

“I don’t come out here and sit enough. I am a social studies teacher and coach. This is my tenured year. It will be nice to have job security. Social studies and history was my thing in school. I didn’t apply myself or make good grades in other subjects. I think struggling through school makes me a better teacher and it helps me relate to students, especially boys. No matter how bad your grades are, you can turn them around. I never dreamed I could be a teacher. One high school teacher told me I would answer to the pearly gates for not trying in school. I went blindly through life ages 14 through 21 without a purpose. My oldest cousins never turned it around and one died a few months ago. Their bad examples are a strong influence with me, but I also had a strong support system my parents. I try to prepare my students for life, not just content. I got my master’s degree in education. That is the highest degree anyone in my family has gotten. I was not the smartest person there, but I got through it because I am tough and worked hard. My dream is to be teacher of the year one day.

I went through a relationship that went too fast. She wanted a ring and a kid. I gave her the ring and a few weeks later she gave it back. There were warning signs I didn’t see because I was in love. That took years to get over and it sent me to a dark place. I am in a good relationship now and I recently chose job security and this relationship over a job offer and a chance to move back home. I think that is the right decision. Life is like waves. In between the waves is the flat spot, the valleys. Those times are hard. I teach kids life is the top and bottom of the waves and they will have both.”

A very inspiring story & am so proud of the person that this is written about. He happens to be my son. His Will to work hard & excel in College achieving his Bachelors & Masters Degrees made me so proud. He was taught that he could be anything that he wanted to be! I feel that helped encourage him…..because parents are supposed to be encouragers & supportive as well as teachers are. I know that his life story will help children be encouraged that they can achieve in life whatever they want to achieve as long as they work hard & believe in themselves. As well as having teachers such as this teacher to encourage, support & teach them life lessons as well.
