“I was born without arms. My toes are my hands. I don’t think of myself as having a disability–this is just the way I am.
Growing up, I couldn’t physically do a lot. There wasn’t much available to me, so I didn’t have experience doing many things. But I’m learning in college what I can do and how to make connections. It’s good to be around other people with disabilities.
I started painting at Mississippi State University. I’ve done a couple of paintings for Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback. We became good friends, and ESPN did a story on us.
I took a photography class and enjoyed capturing moments, so I’m majoring in photography. I take pictures from an app on my phone that I touch with my toe. I also type with my toes on my computer. Technology is amazing.
I take photos around campus and parts of my daily life. Photography helps me deal with my struggles. After I graduate, I want to get a photography job on campus and become a freelance photographer.
I’m learning that the things I thought were impossible are now possible. I can now drive with my feet and recently got my driver’s license. I’m saving up for a modified vehicle. It will be a relief not relying on others to take me places. It’s one more way I can take care of myself.”
