The water was over the roof of our house. Three fish and a Copperhead met me at the door.

“The water was over the roof of our house. We can’t live here. I am a teacher. I lost my job and my house in one day. It is overwhelming and I cry a lot. Clorox and paper towels aren’t going to help. We need sledgehammers and axes. Saturday morning, we got in a party barge and drive around my house. We kayaked and got some of the stuff we put high in the barn. We have been here 12 years. There is mold all over the ceiling. When we got into the house on Tuesday, there were three fish by the door and a Copperhead snake met me there. I lost my marriage certificate, my son’s baptism papers and the baby book with his footprints. We tried to dry it out. We had to bust the window to throw out the Tempur-Pedic mattress that was full of water. Everything was covered in thick, slimy, brown mud. There is a bag of shrimp wedged in the refrigerator and we can’t get it out.”

“I feel bad because I am not able to help anyone else now, but we have to take care of ourselves and there are people worse off than us. If we weren’t in this predicament, we would be helping. I am ready to get going but we need to wait for adjuster. We had nine feet of water in the house, I don’t want to look at this stuff anymore. Tonight was supposed to be my son’s first football game. He practiced all summer and now I don’t know when they will get to play again. It will take a while for things to return to normal.”
