“I was living with my mother and taking care of her. She went into a nursing home in Linden and they got everything. I am homeless now. I was homeless once several years ago after I lost everything through a nasty divorce. That is two times I have lost everything. I have seizures and scraped my knee when I hit it on the concrete. A lady gave me Neosporin ointment and I try to use it. The others all over my legs are fire ant bites. I got them sleeping in the bushes. They ate up my legs. It is hard to find a place to sleep and you have to sleep with one eye open because you don’t know what is on someone else’s mind. The homeless steal from the homeless. I take life day by day and survive on what I can find to eat. There are mean people out here, but not all homeless are bad. I might eat out of a garbage can or a dumpster, but I don’t panhandle or ask anyone for anything. You just hope the food from the garbage can hasn’t been in there too long with flies all over it. This is not the life I wanted. I was once a pipefitter and boilermaker and worked for BE&K in Birmingham for years. This ring is my mother’s class ring. She was born in 1934. I love my mama very much. She is all I have.”
Good enough isn’t an option. It’s got to be the best I can do.
