We have an orphanage for pigs

October 22, 2019

“We have Hog-Warts, an orphanage for pigs in Defuniak Springs. Florida is one of the worst states in the country for the mini-pig epidemic. People buy mini pigs as a fun purchase, thinking they are going to stay small, but they don’t. The pigs are released and aren’t neutered or spayed and that causes the wild hog problem to escalate. Animal control gets them and doesn’t know what to do with them. My husband came home and wanted a pet, but it had to be something my two dogs wouldn’t eat. He chose a pig and there wasn’t much information about them. He got B.B. She is now three feet long, two feet tall and weighs over 200 pounds and still sleeps in our bed. We tried to break her of that habit but she doesn’t listen. Pigs are very sweet when they have been spayed or neutered. Boys who aren’t neutered let off an atrocious smell and will hump everything. People don’t want that. It is hard to find someone to spay or neuter a pig.

We lost our minds, sold our house and bought acreage to have a pig refuge. We rescue hogs and maxed out with 12 in a month. We have a special needs pig right now and she can’t walk, but she is sassy. As we get more volunteers or adopt pigs out, we can take in others. We work with animal control and make sure they have good pens. All of the rescues are maxed out with Florida. Breeders are miscommunicating and saying pigs will stay small. People don’t realize what they are getting into.
I have read the Harry Potter books three times and love the play on words with Hufflesnort, Sniffindor, Ravenhoove, and Slitherswine. We are crazy, but we love these pigs and educating the public about them.”
