“This is my first campaign outside of student government in high school and college. We have campaigned for nine months and left no stone unturned. We raised $90,000 all but $2500 came from Mobile and not special interest groups in Montgomery. We were on five radio stations three publications, social media, a billboard, over 1200 yard signs, and three direct mailers. Win or lose, we did all we could. The messages I have received today is whatever happens, we did it the right way. The ethical way. I wanted to be judged by policy and not party or national politics. As a moderate Republican, we are running a different strategy than Washington. It has been a campaign of Mobile issues such as schools and infrastructure, quality of life, ethical government. None of that has anything to do with political party. Common ground. We hear the loud left and the loud right, but most people are in the middle. Running for office is also a great way to get to know your town and the people in it.
When someone writes a check or takes time out of their day, it is the most humbling experience. It also makes you question how you could do something unethical with people like that behind you. It has been hard for people to separate national politics and local politics. We have gone through years of voting straight ticket Republican and straight ticket Democrat and neither one has gotten us past 49th. That is a failing method of representing the people of our state. Let’s just turn the ship slightly and do some crossover voting. Be better than 49th is our slogan.
We are leaving for New Orleans on Friday and going to Tulane’s homecoming. I am looking forward to dinner at Antoine’s . My wife Lila has been very helpful and we are going to take as many vacations as she has time for over the course of the next 20 years. We are going to Chicago to see Hamilton and maybe the Pacific Northwest. We are going to enjoy the rest of 2018, win or lose. Come Wednesday, it will be all over.”
