“I came here on a boat by myself from Jamaica when I was 17 because I wanted to get an education. It is hard to be by myself, but I am doing OK. I went into the military and served in Afghanistan and I am still active. My best friend was killed there. I was there for 6 months. I live at Fort Benning and come to the Salvation Army to talk to other people and encourage them and volunteer at the Hope Center. I try to encourage kids to go into the military. Your group is here changing people’s lives. These children are here when they could be doing what they do in the summer. Conversations and time together make a difference to people who don’t have many people to talk too. Keep it up.”
