I have done pretty good for a country boy from West Virginia

“I pull big boats with my truck. I was once ground support chief for the Blue Angels in Pensacola. I have done pretty good for a country boy from West Virginia. I went into the Navy at age 15. It was either go into the coal mines or the military. I am 83 years old, born in 1936. My oldest brother served in the Army when Patton was in charge. There were 14 kids. I never worked in the coal mines, but I played in them. My father worked in the coal mine at night and didn’t sleep much during the day. He was killed in a gas explosion in 1953. They couldn’t get anyone out, they just sealed the mine off and made a monument out of the mountain. That is why I went into the Navy. I was in for 30 years and went around the world twice. Three tours of duty in Vietnam. I did riverboat patrol. After I retired, I went to work for the board of education. I worked maintenance for the new high school in Foley for 20 years.

I once drove 18 wheelers. One was loaded with food for a grocery store. I picked up speed down the hills and saw something in the middle of the road. I thought if that is a cow, he is going to be on someone’s table tomorrow. It was a stump that had fallen off a truck, the roots were sticking up. I couldn’t avoid it. I hit it and the truck flipped twice and rolled down the bank. All I got was a bruise on my leg. The trailer was twisted up and there were hams, turkeys, cheese, tenderloin and canned goods all over the place. The state trooper put the word out in the neighborhood close by that the food that needed to be picked up. They came with wagons, wheelbarrows and baby buggies and picked it clean. All that was left was busted cartons of eggs.”
