“We built the first Stokly Family Beach Hut in 2010 during the oil spill. We weren’t able to get our boats on the water so we built this to provide shade and give people a break from the heat or the rain. Some people were hesitant to come up so I put up the sign welcoming everyone and inviting them to put memorabilia and spend some time here. It took off more than I expected. Couples even get married here. We lost a couple during the hurricanes and I wasn’t going to rebuild but people kept stopping by asking about them. This one is number three. People leave sports pennants, things they found on the beach, and tributes to family members who have passed. It creates new friends from people I never would have met. Some come back every year and we have gone to visit a few. We check the hut for new messages. There have been some tributes to may family and that means a lot.
We live in Daphne but come here every weekend. My parents bought this property in Fort Morgan in 1967 and I have been coming here since I was four or five. The goal is to retire here in a few years. I have been around the world, but this is where I want to be.
My dad was well known down here and he became a local landmark. He was a Golden Glove boxing champion and a fisherman and hunter. My mom loved the outdoors, too. She died in April. They both went to Vigor High School. Someday I want to put it to good use for others. Maybe let families with children with cancer stay here and make beach memories together.”
