“I lost my arm in a house fire fifty years ago. It started by a gas stove. We were living in Theodore. I was in bed. Had to put my hand in my mouth because I was in so much pain. I jumped out of the back door. We had a barrel outside the door and I jumped in it and rolled in it. I had first and third-degree burns. I stayed in the burn unit for half a year. It was hard to adjust but I never wanted to give up. I have four kids and the baby was two months old. I cooked and folded clothes with one hand. I cleaned people’s apartments. I provided for my kids and took care of myself. I have arthritis now and use this chair on the days it is hard to walk. My kids check in on me every day and make sure I am all right.”
