I was in special forces so there are a lot of things I can’t tell you about

“I was training a young fellow and I always searched tunnels because most of them were booby trapped. I warned him ahead of time to watch out for the bamboo vipers because they hung the little green snakes from the ceiling. You don’t see them until they get you in the face, so keep your .45 handy. We were crawling through and I must have tripped something because the roof fell on top of me. He grabbed me by my boots and scurried backward and pulled me out or I wouldn’t be here talking to you. I was in special forces so there are a lot of things I can’t tell you about. We took a vow not to talk. A lot of places I went in plain uniform and went in on suicide missions. If you have seen the movie, “We Were Soldiers,” that was us. I can’t go in tunnels or under porches because I still have flashbacks. My name is Joe, but the guys called me Papa. They told the young guys to stick to the oldest guy because he is the one who knows how to survive. One tried to call me Grandpa, but that didn’t last long.”
