This is our first day out without the baby

“We live in my grandparents’ home on Fowl River. They built it in the 40’sand 50’s when no one cared about being on the river.”

“I am from Ocean Springs and he is from Mobile but we met in Vermont. I was working as a caretaker for the Green Mountain Club. That was the best job ever. I got money for college from AmeriCorps. I was celebrating my 26th birthday with the other caretakers in a stone hut with no electricity on the tallest mountain in Vermont. One of my friends had a friend in town who had hiked the whole length of The Long Trail. He showed up at my birthday party and we hit it off. At the time I had a mullet haircut. I let a hiker cut my hair.”

“It was a Kentucky waterfall, There was no mirror so she couldn’t see how bad it was.”

“The hiker said she had a vision for my hair so I let her do it. No one had ever told me that before. I teach Spanish and cultures of the world. I went to Mississippi State and was a Roadrunner and Orientation Leader. A friend was international business and I thought that sounded good so I talked to a counselor and just heard travel and found out the business part wasn’t right for me.”

“I have Red Beard’s Outfitters across the street from Spring Hill College.”

“We had a baby a month ago and this is our first day out without her. I didn’t know I could love a person this much. I used to have a pessimistc outlook on the world with pollution and plastic and politics. Now I have a different view, life isn’t as dark and I hear the lines from ‘What a Wonderful World.’ I hear babies cry, I watch them grow, they’ll learn much more than I’ll never know and I think to myself what a wonderful world.”

“We are involving her in our lives and have taken her hiking and on a boat ride. I had never really held a baby before we had ours. Now I have got it down.”
