“I did one tour in Iraq and one in Germany. I saw kids with bombs strapped to their backs. One minute I was in combat with my best friend and the next minute he was killed with his head on my shoulder. The mind snaps. I am sleeping outside by the river and the mosquitos bite hard. I never thought I would eat out of a garbage can in my own country. My mama raised me as a Christian. She passed away seven days ago. She was the one I talked to. She died and I don’t know which way to go. I lost everything. I try to speak to people and some run away from me. Color can be ugly here. My feet are sore because I do a lot of walking. It clears my mind.”
Good enough isn’t an option. It’s got to be the best I can do.
